Soldier-Wearable Computer System
L-3 Ruggedized Command & Control Solutions (RCCS) has announced that it has developed a small, lightweight, soldier-wearable computer system for remote and rugged military environments. This new system consists of a base computer and a wrist-mounted display unit. It operates in a stand-alone capacity to deliver optimum situational awareness to dismounted soldiers performing under challenging tactical conditions. With an internal GPS and touch screen stylus, the system is an effective solution for a wide array of battlefield applications where size, weight and extreme environmental protection are vital factors.
“Our forward-looking design for the wearable computer system allows us to rapidly reconfigure the system with customer-defined capabilities and performance improvements, such as incorporation of a flexed OLED display in the future,” said John Schulz, operations director and site manager at RCCS. “Our approach is to quickly provide solutions with minimal design changes and qualification requirements.”

Concealable Armor
Safariland, a BAE Systems line of business, has released an additional armor model that satisfies the requirements of the National Institute of Justice’s (NIJ) new Voluntary Body Armor Compliance Testing Program, under NIJ Standard-0101.06 (NIJ-06).
The XT01 Type II is part of the ABA, Xtreme series of concealable armor. Tested against the 9mm and .357 mag. NIJ-designated rounds, the XT01 Type II is a hybrid armor design that combines the high performance of Honeywell Gold Shield ballistic material with Twaron microlaminate for enhanced ballistic and chemical resistance. The combination of these materials provides reliable protection against a wide array of threats, while also offering an enhanced degree of flexibility.
“The XT01 gives us a baseline, entry-level offering that adds to our existing family of armor solutions,” says Tim O’Brien, concealable armor product manager. “The package is competitively priced and offers the performance and comfort that many officers desire.”
Manpack VSAT
L-3 Global Communications Solutions’ Panther X-Band manpack VSAT terminal has successfully completed MIL-STD-810F testing, the test method approved for use by all departments and agencies of DoD. The environmental management and engineering processes described within MIL-STD-810 can be of enormous value to generate confidence in the environmental worthiness and overall durability of a system.
L-3 partnered with iDirect Government Technologies (iGT) for secure data, voice and video connectivity for the Panther, which is integrated with iGT’s iConnex e850mp satellite router board. The iGT router is compact and lightweight so it easily fits into the Panther’s small form factor to provide anywhere, anytime broadband access for mobile military and government users.
The military standard MIL-STD-810 test series addresses a broad range of environmental conditions that include: low pressure for altitude testing; exposure to high and low temperatures plus temperature shock (both operating and in storage); rain (including windblown and freezing rain); humidity, fungus, salt fog for rust testing; sand and dust exposure; explosive atmosphere; leakage; acceleration; shock and transport shock; gunfire vibration; and random vibration.

Night Vision Binos
American Technologies Network Corp. (ATN) has built in their exclusive smart technology into their Night Shadow night vision binocular line. ATN’s smart technology includes a proximity sensor that automatically turns the night vision binocular on when it’s brought into a viewing position—no more fumbling for on/off buttons in the dark or creating excessive movement or sound when predator hunting. An added plus to the proximity sensor is that as the unit turns itself on or off automatically, it saves on the battery life and the life of the unit itself. It also includes easy-to-use digital controls and a long-range infrared illuminator which allows the viewer to see in total darkness with perfect clarity.
ATN’s family of Night Shadow night vision binoculars includes the Generation 1, which is an affordable night vision tool for camping, predator hunting, fishing or personal security. Built on the same high quality and durable foundation, the ATN Night Shadow is also available in Gen.2+, CGT technology that provides a 45-54 lp/ mm resolution with automatic brightness and gain control as well as bright light protection; HPT, which is a multi-alkali compact 18mm format MCP image intensifier increasing sensitivity, resolution, signal to noise ratio and modulation transfer function; Gen. 3; Gen. 3A; Gen. 3P; WPT, which is ATN’s White Phosphor technology, allowing the viewer to see crisper black and white images instead of the traditional green images; and Gen. 4 filmless autogated technology, making the Gen. 4 Night Shadow a tool for military or law enforcement applications.
